Washington splits pair, advances to Oxford regional final

OXFORD, Miss. — Andrew Ely’s two-run homer helped lead Washington to a 4-2 victory over Georgia Tech on Sunday in the NCAA tournament’s Oxford regional.

Washington (40-16-1) will play Mississippi Monday for the regional championship. The Huskies must beat the Rebels twice to advance to the super regionals after losing to Mississippi 2-1 earlier in the day.

Washington starter Jared Fisher struggled with his command early against Georgia Tech, walking in two runs in the first inning. But Ely’s homer in the third tied the game at 2 and the Huskies tacked on two more runs in the sixth.

Reliever Brandon Choate (4-1) earned the win for Washington, and Trevor Dunlap worked four scoreless innings to earn his sixth save. Braden Bishop had two hits.

Matthew Grimes (5-3) took the loss, giving up all four runs. The loss eliminated Georgia Tech (37-26) from the tournament.

In the Huskies’ first game, Christian Trent and Aaron Greenwood combined on a six-hitter to lead Mississippi to the win.

Trent (9-0) scattered five hits over 6⅓ innings, and Greenwood earned the fourth save of the season, pitching 2⅔ scoreless innings

Ole Miss scored its first run in the fourth inning on J.B. Woodman’s double to left field. Auston Bousfield’s solo homer in the fifth inning extended the lead to 2-0.

Washington responded in the seventh inning on Robert Pehl’s run-scoring single, but left two others stranded. Jeff Brigham (8-1) took the loss for the Huskies.
