As I was driving into town early this afternoon for Silvertips practice, there were a number of young men wandering around Broadway wearing navy-blue track suits. That was a curious sight to see at that time of day, and I’ve since learned those were the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Lethbridge is playing a three-in-three within the U.S. Division this weekend, and the Hurricanes are using Everett as their home base, having arrived in town Wednesday night. My understanding is that they’re headed to Safeco Field this evening to take in a Mariners game, and I suspect they won’t have to worry about being able to find good seats.
The Tips don’t face Lethbridge until Saturday, and they have a home date with Kamloops beforehand on Friday. These are games three and four of Everett’s unusual eight-game homestand to open the season. Indeed, the Tips don’t board the bus until their Oct. 16 game at Spokane, which comes at the tail end of the fourth week of the season. How did this come about and what does the team think of this? You’ll have to check tomorrow morning’s paper to find out.
This is the second straight year Everett’s had an oddity about its early schedule. Last year the Tips had that strange 10-day layoff between their third and fourth games. I’m not sure what that means, but I think it illustrates some of the challenges that go with putting together a 72-game schedule.
