After spurning their overtures a year ago, wide receiver Randy Moss made his 49ers debut Monday in a red, No. 84 jersey at the team’s offseason workouts. It was closed to the media, but Moss did speak to the team’s website.
“It was eye opening,” Moss said. “Today was the first day, and we were moving so fast. Today felt like we’d been out here for a week or two.”
Moss, a 13-year veteran, missed the first two weeks of the voluntary program before arriving, as expected, Monday for the phase that allows coaches to observe. Moss signed a one-year deal March 12.
“He’s in shape and he’s ready to go,” general manager Trent Baalke told SiriusXM NFL Radio. “He’s a guy we brought in and believe he can add an element to our game that we didn’t have a year ago on the outside and down the field.”
Baalke said the 49ers reached out to Moss’ agent last year. “The response was, ‘Not interested. Done. Hanging the cleats up.’ So we just let it go. Obviously Randy didn’t come back (in 2011) and sat out the year.”
Moss met with wide receivers coach John Morton at the 49ers’ Santa Clara facility Sunday to go over the team’s schemes, according to Baalke.
Baalke said starting wide receiver Michael Crabtree has participated fully in the offseason program and “his skill sets are going to shine even brighter” because of it. Crabtree’s past three offseasons have been marred by an initial contract stalemate and repeated foot injuries.
Baalke did not rule out the possibility of moving right tackle Anthony Davis, the 49ers’ top draft pick in 2010 and a two-year starter, to the vacant right guard slot.
Reiterating his stance from February’s scouting combine, Baalke envisions Aldon Smith as a full-time starter even though he made no starts last season en route to a 14-sack effort.
