LYNNWOOD — A new kind of Walmart is coming to the city.
The big-box company is planning to open a new store at 17222 Highway 99, about three miles from another Walmart, just outside Lynnwood city limits.
The new will be a “Walmart neighborhood market,” meaning it would be about 45,000 square feet – a fourth of the size of stores called “supercenters.”
“We want the format and the store size to reflect the community the store is in,” spokesman Steven Restivo said.
The smaller Walmarts generally employ about 95 people, between managers, cashiers and sales associates, Restivo said. The store would sell fresh produce, bakery items and household supplies among other things.
This second store is aimed to bring grocery options closer to customers, Restivo said.
The 3.7-acre property was bought by Wal-Mart on Aug. 30 for about $6.95 million, according to the Snohomish County Assessor’s Office website. Since there’s a building already at the location, formerly the Cycle Barn, Wal-Mart would begin renovations in the spring.
A tentative opening date could be as early as mid-2012, Restivo said.
The city has not received any permit applications from the company, economic development director David Kleitsch said.
The neighborhood market is a relatively new store format for Wal-Mart. The first store of this type opened in 1998, and so far there are only 155 in the United States. Lynnwood would be the first city in the state to have a neighborhood market.
There are no current plans to build more of these types of stores in Washington, but it’s a possibility because Wal-Mart plans to have about 300 total nationwide by 2013, Restivo said.
This brings to three the number of Walmarts opening in the county in the near future. Wal-Mart got the OK last September to start building a second store in Marysville. Another also is approved for Monroe, though a lawsuit filed over that one is scheduled to go before a Snohomish County Superior Court judge Dec. 8.
