Gaelic Storm heads to Edmonds

There’s a storm headed toward Edmonds – Gaelic Storm, that is.

Find out “What’s the Rumpus?” as Gaelic Storm brings its Celtic spirit to South County, 7:30 p.m. May 18 at Edmonds Center for the Arts, 410 Fourth Ave. N.

After a start playing monthly gigs for friends at a tavern in Santa Monica, Calif., the band’s popularity skyrocketed when it appeared in James Cameron’s “Titanic” as the Celtic party band in the ship’s steerage. Since then, Gaelic Storm has amassed a large, loyal and ever-growing following.

The band takes a distinct pride in the fact that its music and performances are a celebration of Irish culture as well as a medium of connection for many of the 36 million Irish-Americans who have at least some Irish blood in them.

Tickets are $30-$35, $15 youth; available at www.ec4arts.org or 425-275-9595.

Seattle Symphony to perform ‘Requiem’

Conductor Laureate Gerard Schwarz leads the Seattle Symphony, Chorale and distinguished vocal soloists in one of the iconic works of classical music Mozart’s “Requiem.”

Also on the billing is star violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, who will perform Mendelssohn’s “Violin Concerto,” one of the most beloved concertos in the repertoire.

The concerts are 8 p.m. May 18 and 2 and 8 p.m. May 10 at Benaroya Hall, 200 University St., Seattle.

Tickets are $17-$125 at www.seattlesymphony.org or 206-215-4747.

Captain Smartypants performs Broadway

Captain Smartypants, a small ensemble of Seattle Men’s Chorus, will perform their twisted take on some of the best, worst and funniest moments from The Great White Way with “A Panty Line.”

The performance will feature songs from “Cabaret,” “Into the Woods,” “The Music Man,” “Gypsy,” “Mame” and more, each in their own particular Smartypants style. In addition they will present never-before-seen Broadway hybrids: “Sweeney Poppins,” “The Lion King and I” and “My Fair Lady Gaga,” and parodies of “The Ladies Who Lunch,” “I Put a Little More Mascara On” and “All I Care About is Love.”

Performances are 8 p.m. May 18-19 and May 25-26, plus two R-rated late-night cabarets at 11 p.m. May 19 and 26, at the Erickson Theatre, 1524 Harvard Ave., Seattle.

Tickets are $25 for the main show, $15 for the late-night cabaret, available at 206-388-1400 or www.CaptainSmartypants.org.

Brighton Court drummers join festival

Six senior citizens (average age 88) from Fairwinds-Brighton Court played African djembe drums during the Seattle Rhythm Festival April 28 at Seattle Center.

The group was surrounded by people listening, dancing and drumming along with them. Accompanied by drum instructor Andres Lorenz and their family members, they played until 6 p.m. and then joined the large drum circle in the Center House – where they kept in perfect rhythm with more than 300 other people.

Since it started last year, the African drumming class at Brighton Court has doubled in size. All of the participants are first-time drummers – and first-time instrument players.
