Capt. James Duke Jr. relieved Capt. Michael Coury as commanding officer of Naval Station Everett in a change of command ceremony attended by military personnel, federal civilian employees and distinguished guests at the naval base. Prior to assuming command, Duke was special assistant for CVN Operations, Naval Reactors. He resides in Lake Stevens.

Mountlake Terrace City Manager John Caulfield says he has accepted the city manager position for the city of Lakewood. The Lakewood City Council approved Caulfield’s employment agreement on July 1, and he will begin working there on Sept. 3.

Mayor of Mukilteo Joe Marine was elected vice president of the Association of Washington Cities by the membership at its 80th annual conference. Marine will serve a one-year term for the private, non-profit, non-partisan corporation that represents and serves Washington’s 281 cities and towns.

U.S. Bank has promoted Thomas Roberts to the position of region manager and head of U.S. Bank’s branch network for the Washington Metropolitan Region. Roberts is a 23-year banking veteran. He will lead 650 employees at 70 branches in Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, Bellevue, Everett and surrounding areas.

Gregory Alan Lind, a nurse practitioner from Western Washington Medical Group’s Lake Serene Clinic, has been awarded the prestigious American Association of Nurse Practitioners State Award for Excellence. Lind established one of the first nurse practitioner-owned and operated health care facilities more than 20 years ago.

Mountlake Terrace was awarded a certificate of achievement for excellence in financial reporting for its 2011 comprehensive annual financial report by the Washington Finance Officers Association. This is the sixth year in a row the organization has recognized the city.

Workforce Development Council Snohomish County has been named one of the Best Companies to Work For in Washington by Seattle Business magazine. The Industrial Designers Society of America has honored the industrial design team at Fluke Corp. with an International Design Excellence Award. The Fluke team won a bronze award in the Commercial and Industrial Products category for work on the Fluke 805 Vibration Meter.

Events

Locally operated New Day Children’s Foundation announced that it is hosting an event to benefit children and youth in Island, Snohomish and Skagit counties. Quest to the Castle is a fundraising motorcycle run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, with check-in points at local businesses. Participants may register at www.newdaychildrensfoundation.org.

As part of the sixth annual Staples for Students national school supply drive, local Staples customers can donate $1 or more at Staples stores, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting local students at the Boys &Girls Clubs of Snohomish County. The event ends Sept. 28.

Clothes For Kids, non-profit organization providing wardrobes for low-income families, will host monthly open houses the first Wednesday of each month for the 2013-14 school year. Learn more about the new changes to the use of the lodging tax at a presentation from 10 a.m. to noon on July 24 at the Holiday Inn in downtown Everett. Cost is $10. Affordable Dental Care in Arlington will turn a grand opening celebration into a fundraiser for Lacey Ernst, a local 4-year-old girl in need of a heart transplant. The city of Mill Creek is seeking two volunteers to fill vacancies on the Design Review Board, with a term that expires on Aug. 31, 2016. Meetings are the third Thursday of each month at 5:15 p.m. If interested in volunteering, deliver a letter of interest to City Hall no later than 5 p.m. on July 18.

According to the Lynnwood Convention Center 2012 Annual Report, the facility generated more than $2.5 million in gross event revenue last year and was responsible for generating more than $20.3 million in economic impact for the area. In 2012, the convention center hosted more than 400 events, drawing more than 88,000 visitors.

Swedish Cancer Institute, a major cancer-care network in Washington state, recently announced the acquisition of four Versa HDT systems, a sophisticated radiation treatment system designed to enhance the management of cancer care and treat a broad spectrum of tumors throughout the body. The first of systems will be installed later this year at SCI’s facility on the Swedish/Edmonds campus.

Seattle-based naval architecture and marine engineering firm Jensen Maritime has delivered the first of two Jensen-designed ABS machinery class ocean-going tugboats to Hyak Maritime, a marine equipment and vessel owner in Dover, Del. The craft was built by JT Marine of Vancouver. Hyak’s second tug is scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2013.

High school students from Michigan and Minnesota completed the Two Weeks to Taxi program at Arlington’s Glasair airplane factory. The students built two examples of the Glasair Sportsman and watched as each one was fired up, taxied and flown on a maiden test flight. They won this opportunity through an aircraft design contest.

To respond more rapidly and cost effectively to environmental threats from the state’s growing number of derelict vessels, the Washington Department of Ecology is developing a new water quality permit for vessel deconstruction. Across-the-board ferry fare increases are being proposed by the Washington State Transportation Commission. The increase is to ensure the state meets the ferry-fare revenue target set by the Legislature. The commission is seeking public comment in coming weeks and plans to make a final decision during its meeting at 3 p.m. July 30 at Union Station in Seattle.
