EVERETT — Mourners began filing into Comcast Arena this morning to pay tribute to fallen corrections officer Jayme Biendl.
Among them was Capt. Michael Green, who works at the Washington Corrections Center for Women at Gig Harbor.
He’s been in Everett for much of the past week helping to plan the memorial.
“It has been very emotional,” he said. “Jayme is not only staff but a family member of our department and I think all our staff are doing the best they can to process all of this.”
The memorial is about paying respects to Biendl and her family, he said. Later, corrections officers and staff can begin to privately grieve, he said.
Sgt. Kim Ames, who works at the Washington Corrections Center in Shelton, was greeted with hugs from other corrections workers around the state. Her job Tuesday morning was helping guests find their seats in the arena.
“It’s just an honor to pay tribute to one of those that has just worked so hard in this field,” she said.
