Lynnwood and Meadowdale face off in a key volleyball match next week.

But before the Oct. 19 match at Lynnwood High School, the two teams will join forces against a common opponent: cancer.

Planning for the event started last summer when Royal co-captains Meagan Herzog and Larissa Huff went to coach Jean Kellogg with the idea of raising money to fight cancer.

“We really wanted to do something for the community,” Herzog said.

The issue definitely hit home for many of the players.

Kellogg noted that one of the players’ mother is currently fighting breast cancer, while another lost her mother to ovarian cancer. Earlier this year, Meadowdale softball player Ashley Aven lost her battle with leukemia.

The Royals plan to accept donations for the Cancer Care Alliance and also will be selling ribbons.

Game time is set for 7 p.m.
