AAUW February meeting

The American Association of University Women will meet at 10 a.m., Feb. 11 at Edmonds Community College, Snohomish Hall, Room 304A, 20000 68th Ave. W, Lynnwood. Guest speaker and author Mary Lou Sanelli will discuss “Mothers and Daughters: The Life Cycle/The Mother Daughter Evolutionary Process That Lasts Your Lifetime.”

Garden Club workshop series

Edmonds Floretum Garden Club will host its fourth in a series of Saturday workshops from 10 a.m.-noon on Feb. 11 at the meeting room of Coldwell Banker Bain, 108 Fifth Ave. S in Edmonds. Rita Moore from the Washington Native Plant Society will speak about “Native Plants for the Home Garden.”

Moore is active as an educator and advocate for establishing native plantings in the urban environment. Her knowledge about the preservation and creation of natural habitats will provide ideas for incorporating more native plants in the home garden.

Soup’s on at Molbak’s

Chilly winter days call for satisfying soups the whole family will love. Join registered dietitian Kelly Morrow, of Bastyr University, for a free seminar 10-11 a.m., Jan. 28 at Molbak’s, 13625 NE 175th St., Woodinville.

Saturday night dance classes

Edmonds Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services is offering dance classes Saturday evenings. Join World Swing Dance Council-certified instructor Charles England from the Golden State Dance Teachers Association at:

• 6 p.m. for ballroom

• 7 p.m. for East Coast swing

• 8 p.m. for salsa

• 9 p.m. for West Coast swing

Free Citizenship classes at MLT Library

Registration is now open for the next series of free citizenship classes at the Mountlake Terrace Library, which begins at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 and continues for five sessions. The Mountlake Terrace Library is located at 23300 58th Ave. W.

Whether you are just starting to apply for citizenship or already have an interview date, this series of classes will help prospective citizens prepare for the U.S. Citizenship Test. Taught by a trained volunteer, the classes will offer practice reading, speaking and writing as well as a review of the 100 questions on U.S. history and civics, 10 of which will be asked at the interview. Class size is limited and registration is required for the five-week session.

Free tax prep and e-file at EdCC

Every year Edmonds Community College offers free income tax return preparation and e-filing to U.S. citizens and residents with incomes of less than $49,000. This service is sponsored by an IRS program called Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. Volunteers are taught using IRS training guidelines and are IRS certified to provide confidential tax preparation to qualified taxpayers.

Confidential tax return preparation will be offered on a drop-in basis from Feb. 7-March 16 and April 3-13 in Mountlake Terrace Hall Room 212, Edmonds Community College, 20000 68th Ave. W, Lynnwood. No tax preparation will be done during spring break, March 17-April 2. Assistance in several languages will be available. Tax forms will be provided.

YOUTH ACTIVITIES

Hands-on-Henna at the Mountlake Terrace library

Come to the library to learn how to use a simple cone applicator to make henna designs, 11 a.m. Feb. 4 at the Mountlake Terrace Library, 23300 58th Ave. W.

Krysteen Lomonaco of Mehndi Madness will teach the class. Henna tattoos are safe and will fade in two to four weeks. Free, but registration required. Ages 12 and up. Funded by the Friends of the Mountlake Terrace Library.

SENIOR ACTIVITIES

New events and classes at Lynnwood Senior Center

The city of Lynnwood Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department offers a variety of classes and programs. The following is a sampling of classes starting this month. For more information, prices or to register, call the Senior Center at 425-670-5050.

Ongoing Activities:

• Mexican Train: 1-3 p.m. Thursdays. If you like dominoes and want to kick it up a notch, this is the game for you.

• Scrabble: 9:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Drop in and join a table and invite friends to join the group.

New Classes:

• Chatterboxes: 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesdays, through Jan. 31 and Feb. 7-28. This new social group is talking about whatever, doing whatever and enjoying each other’s company as much as we like. Some days there will be crafts or projects, but mostly there will be a lot of chattering about things that are important to us at the time. Small supply fee for projects payable to instructor may apply.

• Organic Gardening for Winter: 10 a.m.-noon Thursdays, Feb. 2-23. So you’ve prepared your soil for the next growing season. Now is the time to plan and to get ready for the next spring cycle. All year round, there’s something to do in the yard.

• Seated Chair Massage: 8:45 a.m.-noon Wednesdays. Licensed massage therapist has been practicing for 15 years and knows how to work the kinks out of tired and tight muscles. Call the Senior Center and schedule a 15-minute appointment.

• Dental Hygiene: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 10. Services by appointment include assessment, tooth and gum evaluation, oral cancer screening, cleaning and fluoride treatment. Call the Senior Center to schedule an appointment.
