Suit challenges redistricting in South County and rest of state

A lawsuit against the state’s redistricting plan uses several examples from South Snohomish County.

The suit mentions Edmonds, Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace as cities that the Washington redistricting commission unnecessarily divided between two legislative districts.

It cites the 1st and 32nd legislative districts as districts that are split unnecessarily between two counties, and it cites the newly drawn 2nd Congressional District as one that was gerrymandered to favor one candidate – incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen.

State elections officials have asked the state Supreme Court to let this year’s election go ahead under the Commission’s plan because candidates file for office in two months, but those bringing the suit say that courts in other states have decided such cases without delaying elections.
