MONROE – Monroe’s best kept scoring secret this season was guarding the goal last season.
Alex Pagon, who a year ago was named All Western 3A Conference goalkeeper, scored twice and had an assist as Monroe defeated Sedro-Woolley 4-1 in the opening round of the 3A Northwest boys soccer District playoffs Saturday night.
“Its been a fun transition,” Pagon said of the move from goalkeeper to forward. “It’s defiantly been a learning process.”
Monroe had the only goal of the first half when Pagon headed the ball to Erik Williams, who buried the ball into the back of the net in the fifth minute of the game.
Pagon scored his first goal in the 46th minute off a turn around shot from the top of the 18-yard box. The shot went into the upper right corner of the goal to put Monroe up 2-0.
In the 71st minute, Brett Walsh dribbled the ball down the right side of the field, beat a defender and crossed the ball to a diving Pagon. He headed the ball into the goal for Monroe.
Josh Carswell scored for Monroe in the 75th minute. He dribbled the ball 80 yards down the field before slotting it into the side netting to put Monroe up 4-0.
“Its what we bring to the field,” Pagon said of the team’s effort to move on to the next round.
Sedro-Woolley got a goal late in the game after a miscommunication between Monroe players.
When the season beagan, Monroe had three team goals, junior captain Blake Bural said: Win the Wesco 3A Conference, move on to the state playoffs and get to at least the quarterfinals of the state playoffs.
Monroe has succeeded in one and is half way to another. One more victory in the Northwest District playoffs and they will move on to the 3A state playoffs.
