A good education is a great gift to kids

In his Aug. 26 letter, Jon Browder said he feels sick when he hears people worrying over how to pay for their children’s education. He expressed his view that parents do not owe their children a college education (“Funding education: Parents don’t have to pay for college”).

I am thankful that my parents did not share his opinion, and that they started saving money for our college education from the day we were born. My brother and I grew up knowing that college was important and that, when the time came, we would be able to attend with the financial help and enthusiastic support of our parents. They never made us feel that they were making a big sacrifice to send us to college, and they took great pride in our success and academic accomplishments.

Perhaps Mr. Browder would feel less resentful if his parents had been willing and able to give him more help with his education when he was young. A good education is one of the greatest gifts that parents can give to their children, and all parents should do whatever they can to make such an education possible.
