Priority Mail packages and first-class Valentines and cards should reach soldiers overseas on time if mailed by Friday.

Here are some tips:

  • Use the service member’s full name, unit and Air/Army Post Office or Fleet Post Office address with the nine-digit ZIP Code.

  • For packages, place addresses on one side only.

  • Select a strong box and use good cushioning material.

  • If reusing a box, cover all previous labels and markings.

  • Separate batteries from items in the box that might accidentally turn on in transit.

  • Use two-inch wide clear or brown packaging tape.

  • Do not use cord, string or twine.

  • Include a card describing the contents and the sender’s and recipient’s addresses in case the box breaks open.

  • For more information, call 800-ASK-USPS.

And here is a great tip —cushion items with newspaper so soldiers get news from home.
