Arlington

Detective named officer of the year

The Arlington Police Department has named detective Jonathon Wells officer of year for 2003.

Wells has been with the department for nearly four years and has been a detective for two.

"The vast majority of the department selected detective Wells because of his blend of hard work, his compassion for victims and his selfless service to others," Police Chief John Gray said.

The award was given to Wells at the department’s annual meeting last week.

Edmonds

Council to discuss Harley purchase

City Council committee meetings are planned at 7 tonight at the Public Safety Complex, 250 Fifth Ave. N.

The Public Safety department is expected to authorize the purchase of a 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle. It also will discuss an agreement with Lynnwood for a shared domestic violence coordinator, the fire department centennial and fire safety foundation gifts and grants.

Finance will be updating public disclosure requirements and deciding on surplus computers. The parking study and design guidelines will be discussed by Community/Development Services.

While the meetings are public, they are work sessions for the council and staff, so no citizen comment will be taken.

Women, girls

can learn hockey

The Everett Silvertips are having a hockey clinic for women and girls at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Everett Events Conference Center, 2000 Hewitt Ave.

Everett Silvertips coaches, players and staff will present the free classroom-style clinic. Attendees will receive a handbook about hockey rules and regulations in addition to a free ticket to Friday night’s game.

Almost 100 women and girls, many of them mothers and daughters, already have signed up. Registration is required. To sign up, call Devon Woldwith the Silvertips at 425-609-2804.

City’s Riverside

neighbors to meet

The Riverside Neighborhood Association will meet at 7 tonight at the North Middle School library on the west side of the school, 2514 Rainier Ave.

Hal Gausman of the Everett Parks Department will speak, and neighbors will discuss police reports, code compliance, the home of the month and special events.

Church presents play at PUD

Second Baptist Church is presenting a performance of "Deliverer: The Life and Times of a Woman Called Moses" Feb. 20 in celebration of Black History Month.

The one-woman show stars Gloria Jackson-Winters, sister of Second Baptist Pastor Charlie Jackson, who travels around the country from her home in Mississippi to perform the show.

The play will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 20 at the PUD Auditorium, 2320 California St.

Island County

Camano patrol volunteers sought

Camano Island’s Citizens Patrol is accepting applications from residents who would like to volunteer to help deputies.

The patrol has about 25 volunteers who assist deputies by patrolling the island, performing security checks, helping with traffic control and other things.

The patrol has no age limit. Applications will be sent to the sheriff’s office on Whidbey Island. Background checks will be done before accepting new volunteers.

Leaders discuss sewer projects

Sewer District commissioners will discuss two developer extension agreements at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the district office, 9327 Fourth St. NE, Suite No. 8.

They also will talk about Station Utility Local Improvement District 7, Lakemont Vista district 13, Lundeen Phase 2 lift station, 91st Street line replacement and district comprehensive plan amendments.

Lynnwood

Police offer free citizens academy

The Lynnwood Police Department is offering a free 16-week Citizens Academy for residents.

The course is intended to give participants a better understanding of police operations. Classes are 7 to 10 p.m. every Thursday, starting Feb. 19 and running through June 3.

Council assigns committees

The City Council has selected new committee appointments.

The appointments are: Jeff Seibert, finance and public works; Lee Phillips, finance (chairman); John Soriano, finance, public safety (chairman); Lisa Vares, public works (chairwoman); Jeff Vaughan, public works and facilities; Donna Wright, public safety and facilities (chairwoman); and Jon Nehring, public safety and facilities.

Mill Creek

City Council meetings tonight

The City Council has a study session at 6 and a regular meeting at 7:30 tonight at City Hall, 15728 Mill Creek Blvd.

At the study session, the council plans to look at art funding and detention pond fencing requirements. At the regular meeting the council plans to discuss and possibly take action on a resolution approving a wetland buffer variance for the construction of Dumas Road widening improvements.

Monroe

Council will hold work session

The City Council will hold its regular work session at 7 p.m. Wednesday at council chambers, 806 W. Main St.

On the agenda is a consideration of changing the council meeting day. Mayor Donnetta Walser said the council is considering meeting on Tuesdays. The council now meets the first and third Wednesdays of each month.
