SHORELINE – The Snohomish girls cross country team swept the top five spots in a Wesco meet at Hamlin Park Thursday.

Snohomish won the event with the minimum 15 points. Oak Harbor came in a distant second, scoring 67. Then came the host team, Shorecrest, with 84, Mount Vernon with 87 and Cascade with 113.

Last year’s district champion, Amanda Stopa, finished first in 21 minutes. Then came district runner-up Kara Sporrong (21:30), Ellie Bonner (21:40), Alana Feltner (21:48) and Michelle Bastian (21:55).

The first 11 runners to reach the finish were Panthers, then came one runner from Mount Vernon and two from Oak Harbor, followed by four more Panther runners. In all, the Panthers had 15 of the first 18 runners.

“Snohomish girls went out from the very beginning and nobody was ever close,” Shorecrest coach Lane Leland said.

Next week, both Snohomish and Shorecrest are taking their teams to Seaside, Ore., for a large invitational. Last year the Seaside meet hosted more than 80 schools from throughout the West. Some teams came from as far as Hawaii.

Leland says his team is looking forward to the trip. “It’s an interesting meet,” he said. “They run three separate courses; an easy, an intermediate and a hard one.”
