King’s hits free throws to hold off A. Murphy

SHORELINE – The Archbishop Murphy girls basketball team gave the No. 1-ranked King’s Knights all they wanted and more in a Cascade Conference battle Friday night at King’s High School.

Sara Mosiman and Sarah Strand both hit a set of free throws in the game’s final minute to help the Knights hold off a furious Wildcats’ rally and defeat Archbishop Murphy 53-47.

“They’re a very strong team; real solid,” said King’s coach Eric Rasmussen. “It was another classic battle between two good programs that went down to the wire.”

The win helps keep King’s (3-0 in Cascade Conference, 9-1 overall) in first place in the conference. Archbishop Murphy dropped to 1-1, 8-2.

Trailing 48-35 late in the third quarter, Archbishop Murphy, behind five points from Lisa Coate, went on a 9-1 run to close within five points at 49-44. Coate finished with 11 points.

That’s as close as the Wildcats would get as the UW-bound Mosiman and Strand iced the win by going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Mosiman finished with 17 points and six rebounds and Strand scored eight of her 10 points in the final quarter.

“In the first half we didn’t give them any good looks,” Rasmussen said. “They’re a very physical team and we did a good job of countering that early on.”

Archbishop Murphy outrebounded King’s 38-33.
