50 years ago (1956)

Cecilia Shrader, daughter of Master Sgt. and Mrs. Robert I. Coatney of Route 4 Everett, and Betty Allbaught, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph E. Allbaught of Route 2 Marysville, enlisted in the Navy. Navy recruiter Dave Stoddard made the announcement.

Judy Byers, 14, of the Busy 4-H’ers 4-H Club of Edmonds, was demonstrating “Ways with Mayonnaise” during the South County 4-H demonstration and elimination held at Snohomish High School.

25 years ago (1981)

Despite continued high interest rates, Everett-based Olympic Bank managed a 12.14 percent increase in its first-half profit from the same period a year ago. The bank reported net income of $859,000 in the first six month of the year, or $4.30 a share. Net interest income increased 11.5 percent to $5.19 million. The bank’s directors authorized a dividend payment of 75 cents a share for the second quarter.

Emily Carpenter, a teacher at Mukilteo’s Explorer Middle School, attended a recent one-week science education conference at Washington State University. The 49 teachers and administrators at the conference took a look at new materials for middle-school science classes.
