Flower garden dedication set
There will be a dedication ceremony for the Mayor’s Flower Garden at 3 p.m. Tuesday in front of the Arlington Police Station on Olympic Avenue in downtown Arlington.
The Arlington Garden Club replaced the original planting with an old-fashioned flower garden at the request of the mayor.
Apply by Sept. 8 for hotel tax funds
The city’s Lodging Tax Advisory Committee has funds available for local groups to promote tourism in Edmonds.
The money comes from a lodging tax paid by patrons of hotels and motels in the city.
Groups that put on festivals or other civic events that bring tourists to town are among those eligible.
The Lodging Tax Advisory Committee will make recommendations for funding to the City Council, which will make the final decision.

Senior center holds events
The Camano Senior and Community Center is holding its 16th annual collector’s car show and flea market, along with a book sale, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the center, 606 Arrowhead Road.
Crow Island Dixieland Band will entertain, and food will be served. All proceeds go to the Camano Island Senior Program.

Council to discuss new staff positions
The City Council is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the Community-Senior Center, 1808 Main St.

Haircuts provided for needy children
The Family Support Center of South Snohomish County plans to provide free haircuts to low-income children.
The event is scheduled for 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Family Support Center, 6330 195th St. SW, Lynnwood.
Anthony Molinero, owner of the Soma Salon and Day Spa, and his staff will provide the haircuts.
Free school supplies also will be distributed at the event.

City to reopen skate park today
Officials expect to reopen the Marysville Skatepark at 2:30 p.m. today, parks director Jim Ballew said.
The park was closed Monday after vandals caused about $4,000 in damage. They sprayed graffiti, dumped litter and tore down a fence.
Ballew said about 90 percent of the repair work will be completed by today. Some concrete work will be postponed until fall. Still, he said, the park is safe to reopen.
Driving class for seniors set
Valley General Hospital plans to offer an AARP driver safety program from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at 14701 179th Ave. SE.
The cost for the refresher course for seniors is $10. Pre-registration is required.

Plat subdivision will get a hearing
A hearing on a subdivision application is scheduled for Aug. 24.
The city’s hearing examiner will hear residents’ comments on a plan by Trius Development to subdivide 1.35 acres into 15 single-family lots. The lots would contain three buildings of five attached units.

Riverfront Trail wins award
The city’s Riverfront Trail project recently received a 2006 award of excellence from the Federal Highway Administration and the Washington State Department of Transportation.
The city finished renovating the trail in February. The $2.5 million project included installing steel girders and stabilizing the riverbank along the trail, which was damaged by a major flood in 1995.
The award recognizes the best local agency transportation projects funded by the highway administration.
AARP driver safety courses
AARP is holding a driver safety program for people over 50 at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Stanwood Senior Center, 7430 276th St. NW.
There are no tests and no driving sessions. Participants work through a curriculum emphasizing defensive driving techniques.
To register, call 360-629-7403. A $10 fee is charged to cover the cost of materials. The state of Washington offers auto insurance discounts for those who complete the course. Check with your insurance carrier for more information.
