Love story Ron and Jacque Wells

Published 9:00 pm Tuesday, August 15, 2006

Jacque and Jo were best girlfriends when they attended Bell High School in California in the early 1950s.

The two girls hung out together and Jacque met Ron Wells, Jo’s brother, when she went to her friend’s house. Ron went to the same high school.

“I never really noticed him,” Jacque said.

It was a while later, after Ron went into the U.S. Marine Corps, that Jo reintroduced Jacque to her brother. One day he asked Jacque if she would like to go on a date with him.

“I said, “Yeah, I guess,” Jacque said.

On that first date, the two went to a big amusement park at the beach.

Ron and Jacque liked each other from the start.

They began dating and went to drive-in movies and dances. Several months went by and Ron asked Jacque to go steady. She wore a ring of Ron’s on a chain around her neck to signify that she was his girl.

About 15 months later, Ron and Jacque got married.

Ron and Jacque Wells of Monroe will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 18.

They were married Aug. 18, 1956, in Bell, Calif.

The couple have three children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ron was still in the Marines when they got married. The family moved to Camp Pendleton, north of San Diego.

“We had a lot of tough times,” Jacque said. “He didn’t make a lot of money.”

Ron went to Japan and Jacque stayed in California with their daughter. She had some family nearby to help out.

The couple stayed the course, and their love grew throughout the years.

“We stuck in there and worked things out together,” Jacque said.

Both Ron and Jacque came from divorced parents and didn’t want that to happen to them.

Jacque says that communication is an important part of having a strong relationship through 50 years.

“A lot of people today are just ready to give up,” she said. “Sometimes you have to just work it out.”

Ron and Jacque moved to Washington in 2000. Their daughter lived here at that time, and their son moved to the area from California.

Jacque said Ron means a lot to her. He has been a wonderful father and he’s funny, she said.

“You have your ups and downs, but you look back and I’m glad we stepped over our hard times,” Jacque said. “It was worth it.”
