Man charged in ex-girlfriend’s rape, abduction

Prosecutors on Tuesday filed six felony charges, including first-degree kidnapping, against a man who they say abducted his 20-year-old ex-girlfriend from her mother’s home in Woodinville hours after raping her at her apartment in Kirkland.
Eduardo Arevalo-Solis, 19, a transient Mexican national, was charged with first-degree kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, third-degree rape, first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal trespass and auto theft.
Kirkland police arrested him two blocks from the police station the afternoon of Nov. 8. According to charging papers, he had just dropped off his 20-year-old victim near the station, after a harrowing road trip that lasted hours.

Olympia: Child care workers get contract
Newly unionized family child care providers and the state have agreed on a first-ever contract that would boost wages significantly over the next two years.
The Service Employees International Union Local 925, representing 12,000 family child-care providers, estimates the contract is worth about $50 million. The funds will be included in the governor’s budget and the Legislature is expected to approve the pact, effective next summer.
The contract is the first to be negotiated under terms of a new collective bargaining law. Child-care workers are not state employees, but the state pays them to care for state clients, many from welfare families where parents are looking for work or going to school.

Mount Baker: Ski area set to open today
Chair lifts are scheduled to start running at 9 a.m. today at the Mount Baker Ski Area.
Rain and above-freezing temperatures are forecast for today, and the snow level is expected to rise to 5,500 feet. But ski area spokeswoman Gwyn Howat said there is enough snow on the hill that rain won’t delay opening.
Snow depth at the ski area was 63 inches Tuesday afternoon, according to the Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center. The snow level is expected to drop back to 2,000 feet, and nearly a foot of snow is expected to fall by today.
The Washington state Department of Transportation hopes to have both lanes of Mount Baker Highway open by today. The road was damaged during recent floods.
Crystal Mountain also is planning to open today, and Stevens Pass is planning to open Friday. Snoqualmie Pass has not yet scheduled an opening date.

Olympia: Hair dispute now a legal matter
A bad hair day could turn into potential jail time for Dana Kelly, a 39-year-old mom from Rainier who refused to pay for a $37 haircut at Audrey’s Elements of Style.
Kelly said her stylist botched the job, and she received poor service. But the police report alleges she was trying to get the haircut for free.
Kelly faces misdemeanor theft charges. If convicted, she could face up to a year in jail and a $5,000 fine.
Olympia Police Cmdr. Tor Bjornstad compared refusing to pay for a haircut to eating a meal at a restaurant or drinking a beer at a bar and refusing to pay.
Kelly claims the criminal charge is unfair.
“I didn’t do anything wrong,” she said. “I reasonably refused to pay for services that were not provided.”
