50 years ago (1956)

An Everett man who was in Europe at the time of the Hungarian crisis said that Radio Free Europe’s part in the revolt caused harsh feelings toward Americans among many Europeans. Chester “Bud” Beard Jr. was studying in Paris at the time of the uprising.

A group of Frances Nordby’s piano and accordion students entertained their parents at her studio in Lake Stevens. Performing were Marilyn Rux, Geraldine Solem, Robert Lawrence, Ruth Thaanum, Doris Tobey, Carla Olson, Bill Nielsen, Robert Klett, Diana Benedict and Pat Ness.

25 years ago (1981)

Roy Fraser had established a Christmas clearing house offering free gifts for those in need. Fraser, who suffered from diabetes, received help from his parents. He visited charity groups and made sacrifices such as selling his prized 1922 Studebaker. The shop was located in warehouse space donated by Tiz’s Doors at 39th Street and McDougall Avenue.

Mike Champion, a 6-foot, 9-inch senior center, scored a game-high 26 points to lead Everett High School to a 64-49 victory over Highline in a nonconference game. Chris Chandler added 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Gulls.
