Train elderly to use cell phones, etc.

As a driver who falls in the category of age 65 and older, I am compelled to comment on the letter regarding this subject in Thursday’s Herald. At my age it is more difficult to dodge drivers who are using their rear view mirror to put on make-up or shave as they rush to their destination. Cell phones were not available during most of my time, so I may not be aware of the added road space needed for drivers using phones or wireless laptops, or even reading as they drive. When I must use the freeway it is nearly impossible to stay out of the way of the multitude who think 60 mph means 70 or the few who go 80 or more.

Yes, I am hearing impaired but I can still hear the loud rap music that reverberates from an occasional car. Perhaps if classes were available and we were required to pay for training in these and other issues facing the elderly driver the writer and like-minded public could tolerate us a bit longer. And oh, yes, we could be required to put bumper stickers on all of our vehicles that say “Hearing Impaired. Please Use An Obscene Gesture In Lieu Of Horn.”
