Eagles end Seagulls’ season

ARLINGTON – The Everett girls basketball team had three chances to extend its season.
The Seagulls missed three shots in the closing seconds and Arlington’s Alyssa Marsh replied with a tie-breaking layup with four seconds remaining to give the Eagles a 62-60 victory in a Class 3A District 1 loser-out playoff game Monday at Arlington High School.
Everett held a 31-24 lead at the half and rallied to finish the third period ahead 48-44.
“Every time we built momentum, they came back at us,” Seagulls head coach Kelly McCoy said. “(Arlington) came ahead in the third and it was back-and-forth down the stretch.”
Sheryl Scheppele scored 16 points to lead the Eagles. Shayna Prause added 15 points and Marsh finished with 12 points – all in the second half.
“She had a huge second half,” Eagles head coach Nathan Davis said of Marsh.
Arlington advances to face Mount Vernon, a 55-42 winner over Squalicum, in a loser-out game at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Arlington High School.
Erika Hornyak had a game-high 21 points for Everett.
