That large military ship that pulled into Naval Station Everett last week is the USNS Soderman, part of the Military Sealift Support Command.
The ship, which is based in Diego Garcia, off the tip of India, makes periodic visits to the Northwest.
It last visited Naval Station Everett in 2003, base spokesman Rick Huling said.
The transport ship is used primarily to haul materials for the U.S. Army. It’s 951 feet long, 106 feet wide and can carry more than 900 vehicles, including tanks and trucks. Its crew includes both civilian and military personnel. The Soderman is in Everett to take on supplies and await new orders.
The ship is named to honor Pfc. William A. Soderman (1912-1980). President Harry S. Truman presented Soderman with the Medal of Honor during a ceremony at the White House on Oct. 12, 1945. Soderman was cited for defending a key road junction near Rocherath, Belgium, during World War II.
