Lakewood dodges elimination

MARYSVILLE – Lakewood sent 12 batters to the plate in a seven-run sixth inning as the Cougars broke open a one-run game to beat Mount Baker 10-2 in a 2A winner-to-district, lose-out baseball game Tuesday at Lakewood High School.
Lakewood advanced to the first round of the District 1 playoffs. The Cougars play Anacortes at 1 p.m. Saturday at Daniels Field in Anacortes. The top four teams from the double-elimination tournament advance to the regional playoffs.
“(Anacortes) is a good ball club,” Lakewood coach Larry Delaney said. “We know they are a team that can swing the bats. We have our work cut out for us.
“It’s nicer to be in double elimination instead of single like today.”
Lakewood pitcher Ryan Martin allowed one earned run and had seven strikeouts.
Lakewood’s John Brown batted 2-for-3 with three runs batted in. He had a two-run double in the second inning and a an RBI single in the sixth.
