Leave the cables for more protection

I couldn’t agree more with Richard Gallagher’s Wednesday letter “State always picks most costly repair.”
Installing the Jersey barriers between the existing cables would seem to be the easiest and cheapest way to go. Oops, I forgot, cheap and easiest are two items politicians seem to know nothing about.
Also, why is it necessary to remove one set of cables? There would appear to be adequate room between the two sets for the barriers. Having both sets in place gives just that much more effectiveness to the whole solution. After all, the cables work just fine, it’s the idiots who choose to ignore the posted speed limits that are the problem.
And while I’m on my soap box, can anyone explain to me why it is necessary to widen portions of I-5 to implement the addition of the barriers – aside from wasting more tax dollars, that is?
It would appear the more education you throw at a problem, the less common sense is applied.
