Before and after school care offered
Shoreline Schools offers before- and after-school care for elementary school students beginning Sept. 3. The extended care program is available from 6:30 a.m. before school and until 6:30 p.m. after school.
Students enrolled in the program participate at the school they are attending. Each school is staffed by qualified instructors and the programs include one-on-one homework assistance, organized activities and a snack.
The cost is $354 per child per month for morning and afternoon care. Morning only care is $157.50 and afternoon care is $196.50. Programs at selected schools accept DSHS payments.
Families may enroll at any time during the school year. Drop-in care is not available. For further information contact the extended care program at 206-361-4256 or drop by the program offices, located at 1900 N. 170th.
YMCA offers school programs
The Shoreline/South County YMCA offers before and after school child care programs for kindergarten to elementary-age children. The services are designed to match the school calendars.
Care is offered before and after the regular school day. Additional care is offered for early release and conference days. Shoreline YMCA serves Ridgecrest, Briarcrest, Parkwood, North City, Brookside, Echo Lake, Merdian Park elementary schools in Shoreline; Chase Lake Elementary in Edmonds and Beverly Elementary in Lynnwood.
Subsidized child care programs such as DSHS and King County Child Care Assistance are accepted. YMCA financial assistance is available for qualifying families. For more information or to register, contact the Shoreline/South County YMCA at 206-364-1700.
UW announces awards
The University of Washington has announced that the following local students have been awarded scholarships for the coming year:
A National Merit Scholarship was awarded to Julian Wasson of Shorewood High School.
Receiving Undergraduate Scholar Awards are Kristina Bajema, Holy Names Academy; Erin Duncan, Kristina Guyton and Alan Sledd , Lakeside Academy; Jordan Bowler and Zachery Geballe, Shorecrest High School; Erik Fagerstrom, Jessica Fagerstrom, Meagan Hoane, Michelle Hurtubise, Jessica Namkung, Jennifer Shin, Nathan Penner, Shiaokai Wang, and Patrick Woodruff, Shorewood High School.
YMCA Parent-Child groups form
Looking for a fun way to spend time with your child and other parents? Groups of Dads/Daughters and Dads/Sons that will meet regularly for fun and fulfilling monthly activities during the school year are now forming at the Shoreline/South County YMCA.
Known as Y-Guides and Y-Princesses, these parent-child programs incorporate a Native American cultural emphasis on family and community into contemporary activities for busy families.
Financial assistance for YMCA programs is offered by confidential application to families in need. For more information about joining a parent-child program, call the Shoreline/South County YMCA at 206-364-1700.
Library program needs helpers
Help students from elementary through high school with homework at the library. A two hour per week commitment is all that is needed. As a volunteer, you will be trained to be familiar with the library and its procedures and resources. You would help students in any of a number of subject areas.
