Seahawks top Scots in district tournament opener

Shorecrest couldn’t come up with an answer for some red-hot shooting by Anacortes in the first round of the Northwest District 3A girls basketball tournament Wednesday night.
The Seahawks drilled six of their seven attempts from 3-point range in the second half to secure a 52-38 victory over the Scots at Anacortes High School.
Keisha Reynolds hit three consecutive 3-pointers to open the fourth quarter and finished with 14 points for the fourth-seeded Seahawks, who move on to a winner-to-state contest against Sehome.
“She flat out lit us up,” Scots coach Don Dalziel said. “They were able to get their perimeter game going in the second half and we had some playoff jitters, which comes with being a young team.”
The score remained close early on until Anacortes traded their man-to-man defense for a 1-2-2 zone.
“We had a hard time adjusting to it, even though it wasn’t the first time we’ve seen it this season,” Dalziel said. “They took us out of our offensive flow by putting a lot of pressure on the ball.”
To earn their first state berth, the fifth-seeded Scots now must win three loser-out games in a row, starting with a 6:30 p.m. matchup tonight at Skagit Valley College against Western Conference South Division rival Lynnwood.
Shorecrest (11-10) swept its regular-season series with the eighth-seeded Royals (7-14), who have lost nine of their last 13 games.
The Scots wound up in the same position last season after dropping their playoff opener and bounced back for three straight victories over Northwest 3A League opposition.
