BRIER – The Emergency Services Coordinating Agency (ESCA) is offering to train citizens to serve as volunteer radio operators.
When telephone and public safety radio systems are overwhelmed or damaged in a disaster like a major earthquake, volunteer radio operators provide emergency communications. Volunteer radio operators work with fire, EMS, police and public works disaster responders to help others.
“Becoming a licensed amateur radio operator can open many opportunities for community service as well as launch an interesting new hobby,” said Bob Donnell, ESCA assistant radio officer. “Unlike Citizens Band (CB) or Family Radio Service (FRS) frequencies, licensed amateur radio operators enjoy the exclusive use of FCC-regulated frequencies that can carry radio transmissions across the state, country or around the world.”
The six-week course will start on Jan. 10. The class will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays at the Emergency Services Coordinating Agency office located at 2901 – 228th St. SW., in Brier.
The course is free, but students must purchase the textbook, “Now You’re Talking,” 5th edition, which costs $19.95 and is available through the American Radio Relay League.
At the end, students can take a test to earn a Technician-class FCC Amateur Radio License during the class. The examination fee is $14.
