SAO PAULO, Brazil — The U.S. Embassy said Thursday that it is encouraging Brazil to buy Boeing-built F-18 Super Hornet fighter jets — one of three models selected by Latin America’s largest nation as finalists for a fleet revamp.

The embassy’s statement said the “U.S. regards Brazil as a key strategic partner and supports Brazil’s program to modernize its armed forces.”

“Purchase of the F-18 with its superior technology will be an important step in developing our partnership,” the statement said. “We are fully behind Boeing’s sales effort.”

Brazil is expected to make a final decision on the 36 new planes by late next year, Boeing said.
