Celebrate children’s books at reading
Arlington Library has scheduled a family evening that features readings by former longtime Arlington educator Linda Byrnes.
The program, Old Favorites, New Discoveries: A Celebration of Children’s Books, is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at the library, 135 N. Washington Ave.
Those who attend can learn what the most popular kid’s books are and discover some new reading treasures.
Also, children’s book artist Kathleen Kemly offers a program for the library’s Children’s Book Festival, set for 7 p.m. Nov. 20, also at the library. Kemly plans a lesson in illustration and creating funny characters.

Camano Island
Shelter benefit offers pet photos with Santa
Camano Animal Shelter Association has a fundraising event set for 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Country Store, 8815 271st St. NW, Stanwood.
Santa Claus plans to be on hand to pose with pets. Four photos on a CD of Santa and your pet are $20.

Chamber receives money for tourism, visitor center
Island County recently released the list of nonprofit organizations set to get hotel-motel tax revenues in 2009 for tourism promotion.
The projects and activities funded by the 2 percent tax are set to receive a total of $94,000.
Camano Island Chamber of Commerce is to receive $11,665 for visitor information staffing and tourism marketing.
Other groups receiving money include Greater Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce, $21,386; Central Whidbey Chamber of Commerce, $18,470; Langley Chamber of Commerce, $18,470; Freeland Chamber of Commerce, $13,609; Clinton Chamber of Commerce, $5,832; Coupeville Arts Center, $1,458; Penn Cove Water Festival, $972; and Whidbey Island Vintners, $972.
Marysville
City needs volunteer for salary commission
The city is seeking someone to fill a vacancy on its salary commission.
The commission is an independent, seven-member board that conducts annual reviews of compensation for the mayor and City Council members.
The open position is being vacated by Andrew Sandoval, who served the limit of two three-year terms on the board.
Board members must live in Marysville. Anyone interested may submit a letter of interest to assistant administrative services director Tracy Jeffries, Marysville City Hall, 1049 State Ave., Marysville, WA 98270.
The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Dec. 1.
