Two Snohomish County middle schools honored
Two Snohomish County middles schools, Heatherwood Middle School and Gateway Middle School, recently were named Schools of Distinction by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. The schools were among 99 schools in the state to receive the designation. Each school earned $10,000 for its consistent improvement in student test scores.
Last year, Evergreen Middle School earned the award and was one of only 89 schools in the state to do so.
Lake Stevens elementary school helps food bank
Students at Hillcrest Elementary School recently donated 1,233 cans of food to the Lake Stevens Food Bank to help families struggling with the now-resolved Boeing strike, bills and other economic issues.
Fourth-graders in Lindsay Washo’s class collected 182 cans of food, the most of any class, earning the honor of collecting food from each class and helping to load the food bank truck.
The students set a goal to collect one can of food per student. The school has 605 students in kindergarten to fifth grade. Student not only reached their goal within three days, but also doubled their goal in five days.
Arlington third-graders receive dictionaries
The Arlington Kiwanis Club and Friends of the Library recently handed out dictionaries to 650 third-grade students in Arlington. Kiwanians Sue Weiss, Michael Prihoda and Denny Byrnes along with Michelle Heiderer from Friends of the Library handed out dictionaries to third-graders in Jennifer Case’s classroom at Presidents Elementary. Students were excited to learn that the books were not only to use in class, but theirs keep.
EvCC quiz nets $5,000 from Fred Meyer Stores
Fred Meyer Stores recently donated $5,000 to support the Everett Community College Hi-Q program, an academic quiz competition for Snohomish and Island County high school students. This year, 22 area high school teams are slated to participate in weekly competitions, vying to secure a spot in the Hi-Q playoffs.
Hi-Q is in its 33rd year and is the oldest, continuous academic quiz competition for high school students in the nation. Dates for the event are posted at www.everettcc.edu/hiq and also are rebroadcast on KRKO and Comcast’s Community Channel.

Lake Stevens names Students of Month
The Lake Stevens School Board recently named Students of the Month for October.
The students, listed by their schools and grade were:
Lake Stevens High School, 10th grade: Kaylynn Tobias and Michael Kemp.
11th grade: Breanne Baumann and Chase Crowley.
12th grade: Kaitlin MacKenzie and Brendan Cheap.
PROVE High School, 11th grade, Gopal Ortiz.
Cavelero Mid High School, eighth-grade: Kacie Masten and Alexander Powell.
Ninth-grade, Rachel Fowler and Tanner Long.
Lake Stevens Middle School, sixth-grade: Rhianna Messer and John Greer.
Eighth grade, Kelsi Jackson and Austin Woo.
North Lake Middle School, sixth grade: Jamie Santos and Tanner Siler.

Everett High students raise $6,400 for kids
The Everett High School Leadership class recently raised more than $6,400 for Children’s Seattle through a schoolwide fundraiser called “Save it or Shave it.” Valerie Stahl and Kayla Anderson created and coordinated the fundraiser for the hospital, and enlisted other students to help.
Arlington high school a top 10 alternative school
Weston High School in Arlington recently was named one of the top 10 Highest Performing Alternative Schools in Washington State by the BERC Group. The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction commissioned the study to examine secondary alternative education programs across Washington. Out of the 242 alternative secondary schools in Washington, 100 schools were studied in areas including WASL scores, graduation rates and teacher qualifications. BERC also conducted site visits and interviewed students and staff.
Everett Rotary Club names students of month
The Rotary Club of Everett recently named its November Students of the Month. The students were chosen by school counselors for achieving a significant scholastic record, combined with extra curricular participation in school and community events.
The students were: Rachel Shober, Archbishop Murphy High School; Brianne Loomis, Cascade High School; and Ana Sagastume Chinchilla, Everett High School.
