EdCC Women’s Conference on April 10

Edmonds Community College’s fourth annual Women’s Conference will be held from noon to 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 10 at the college (20000 68th Ave. W, Lynnwood).
The focuses of the conference is on Wellness: Mind, Body &Spirit. Workshops will address homeopathy, hormonal changes, yoga and ayurveda, breast care, eating for anti-inflammation, and creative writing for healing.
The keynote speaker will be Pepper Schwartz, professor of sociology at the University of Washington and bestselling author of “Prime: Adventures and Advice on Sex, Love, and the Sensual Years.” Her presentation will be on Keeping Your Balance: Holding on to What’s Important in Challenging Times. She will sign books after her address and at a reception following the conference.
Edmonds Community College Women’s Studies instructor Christine Greenway will also present a workshop on body image at the conference. A resource fair of community agencies will also introduce participants to local services for women.
A Heart and Grace reception, honoring a local woman artist, follows the conference from 5-7:30 p.m. in the art gallery on the third floor of Lynnwood Hall. The reception is free and open to the public.

MLT thespians invited to Nebraska
Students from International Thespian troupe 3627 at Mountlake Terrace High School have been invited to perform at the 2009 International Thespian Festival. The Thespian Festival takes place June 22-27 on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL).
Mountlake Terrace students, under the direction of Jeannie Brzovic, received the invitation to open the week of festival performances on the evening of June 22 with The Reduced Shakespeare Company’s The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged).
“The opportunity to share a show that my students love to perform with Thespians from all over the United States is a dream come true,” Brzovic said in a press release. “Representing our school and community is an honor. Spending a week sharing, learning and celebrating theater with thousands of students who appreciate the work of their peers and relate to one another will be an incredible experience, one for which we can’t wait.”
“Throughout the year, we send screeners to evaluate shows being considered for coveted Thespian Festival performance slots,” Thespian Festival director Nancy Brown said. “Mountlake Terrace High School’s production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) ranks among the best high school productions previewed by screeners. “
Terrace silent auction is April 24
Mountlake Terrace Elementary School’s silent auction and dinner will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 24 at the school’s gym. The proceeds from the event will be to used by the PTA to support the school, teachers and unfunded and underfunded programs.
Students compete in state bee
Three Edmonds School District students competed in the 2009 Washington Geographic Bee on Friday, April 3 in Tacoma.
Brier Terrace Middle eighth-grader Jack Griffing, College Place Middle School seventh-grader Scarlett Strauss, and Terrace Park fifth-grader Alec Sjoholm all qualified for the state-level competition by winning their school’s competition and then scoring highly on a qualifying test.
The qualifying test put them among the top 100 students in the state. Benjamin Salmon an eighth-grader from the Highline Home School Center in Burien will represent Washington in the national finals at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C., May 19 and 20. Washington has produced five national champions during the history of the bee.
