King County Council deciding tax increase vote

SEATTLE — The King County Council was a vote short Monday of putting a sales tax increase on the August ballot, so the council will decide today whether to ask voters to approve a property tax hike instead.

KCPQ-TV reports this is the last day to get a tax measure on the August ballot. The proposal would increase the property tax on a $400,000 home by $34 a year.

The money would help fund the sheriff’s office, prosecutor’s office and county courts. Without more money, Sheriff Sue Rahr has warned she will have to lay off deputies and reduce criminal investigations.
