Four families displaced in Everett fire

EVERETT — A fire likely started by a candle caused more than $300,000 in damage and displaced four families at an apartment complex near 128th Street SW on Sunday.
No one was injured in the fire in the 13000 block of Eighth Avenue W. The fire was reported at 1:55 p.m. in a 12-unit, three-story building at an apartment complex, said Leslie Hynes, spokeswoman for Snohomish County Fire District 1.
Smoke was coming out the window of a second-floor unit near the middle of the building when firefighters arrived, Hynes said.
Four brothers, ages 15, 9, 3 and 2, were at home in the second-floor unit where the fire started. All safely escaped. About 30 firefighters from Fire Districts 1 and 7 responded and had the fire under control within about 15 minutes.
Flames were contained to the unit where the fire started, but three other units were uninhabitable because of smoke or water damage. Snohomish County Chapter of the Red Cross and Support 7 responded to assist the four families, a total of 21 people, displaced by the fire.
An investigator from the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s office determined the fire was started by a candle that was knocked off the headboard onto the bed in the master bedroom.
