50 years ago (1962)

A pair of barbers whose careers went back to before the Spanish-American War struck up poses in their respective barber shops. They were Arlington “oldster” Albert Giersch, 92, and Everett “youngster” Paul N. Oakes, 80. Oakes opened his shop in 1898 and Giersch started 20 years after the Civil War.

The best boxer that Northwest had turned out in two decades, Harry “Kid” Matthews, had settled in Everett, but wasn’t doing any punching. Matthews, now retired, today took over United Rental at 5604 Evergreen Way. Matthews would rent about anything that could be rented and do repairs on about anything taken into the store.

25 years ago (1987)

Kinman Business University, located on the sixth floor of the Central Building at Hewitt and Rockefeller avenues, advertised degrees in three to 12 months in business management, sales and marketing, secretarial, computers, accounting and travel. They also offered placement assistance and financial aid.

Henry’s Lady advertised that their seafood buffet towered above all the rest. It was all you could eat for $10.95. The restaurant was located at the Tulalip Inn, just off I-5 at Marysville Exit 199.
