Sheriff: Deputy shot at gun-wielding driver in Leavenworth

LEAVENWORTH — Authorities say a central Washington sheriff’s deputy fired shots at pickup truck driver after the man displayed a gun.
Chelan County Sheriff Brian Burnett says that as the deputy approached the vehicle in a parking lot in Leavenworth just before 1 a.m. Tuesday, the man, a 66-year-old from Cheyenne, Wyoming, displayed a gun and the deputy fired. It’s not clear if the driver also shot.
The driver then took off, leading two deputies on a pursuit on U.S. Highway 2. Washington State Patrol troopers deployed spike strips to puncture the truck’s tires near Cashmere, but it continued for a mile before coming to rest in a ditch.
The sheriff’s office says the man surrendered after a brief standoff. He had a gunshot wound to the hand and was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
A regional investigations team is reviewing the incident.
