Va Va Va Voom!
It’s been awhile since I’ve experienced the thrills and chills the 2016 BMW 340i provided. It’s the first model in the entire BMW lineup to be powered by the all-new 3.0-liter, TwinPower Turbo, 24-valve with variable control, direct-inject, inline six-cylinder engine. With that many adjectives, it had better live up to its billing.
And it did.
The engine generates maximum power of 320 horsepower between 5,500 and 6,500 rpm, and peak torque of 330 lb.-ft. available from 1,380 rpm. Equipped with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, the 340i accelerates from 0-to-60 miles per hour in 4.8 seconds.
And, just in case you self-control is lacking – or your need for speed is insatiable, the car is governed at a top speed of 155 miles per hour. I only approached half of that, but I’m sure our WSP would gladly throw you in the clink if they caught you trying. Now the Autobahn, however, would be an entirely different story.
This version was my preferred rear-wheel drive, but others may want xDrive, the BMW intelligent all-wheel drive system. BMW xDrive combines the customary advantages of all-wheel drive such as optimal power transfer to the road, excellent safety and maximum traction.
At the heart of the BMW brand, the 3-Series has been around awhile, since 1975 in fact.
Global sales reached almost 14 million units last year. Not too shabby.
The 3-Series consistently sets the benchmark in the compact sports car category. The line-up, which includes the 320i sedan, 328d sedan, 328i sedan, and my tester, have been given a life-extending freshening for this model year.
Driving Dynamics Control give the 340i a variety of personalities – one to fit your specific mood on any given day: There are ECO PRO, Comfort, Sport and Sport-Plus settings. In addition, the car’s handling, ride and braking match its acceleration.
That is accomplished, thanks in part, to dynamic stability control, dynamic traction control, and anti-lock brakes with dynamic brake control and cornering brake control. The 340i speedily slides in and out of corners with precision and confidence.
My tester included the M Sport Package ($2,600) which gives the 340i an even sportier vibe. The package includes 19-inch wheels, leather sport seats, aerodynamic kit, and M Sport suspension and steering.
Other options on this bad boy were a Cold Weather Package ($800), Driver Assistance Plus ($950), Lighting Package ($800), and Technology Package ($2,750).
When you’re not pushing the car’s limits, you might enjoy the 340i’s Harman Kardon surround sound audio system, active cruise control, satellite radio, two-way power moonroof, navigation system, Bluetooth or any other number of gadgets and gizmos.
