If you’re looking for a family sedan but don’t want to sacrifice a sporty, stylish, upscale ride that is still affordable – look no further than the 2020 Mazda6 Signature, the Japanese automaker’s flagship, mid-size masterpiece.
My tester came with Mazda’s Soul Red Crystal coat of enamel, which reminds old-timer’s like me of Candy Apple Red when the sun shines. It just looks rich. Couple that with a Parchment Nappa Leather interior to make you smile on an otherwise, gloomy winter’s day.
Powered by a Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter, turbocharged, DOHC four-cylinder engine paired with a Skyactiv-Drive sport-mode automatic transmission, the combo delivers 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque.
Mazda6 seats up to five adults, comes with an oversized trunk that I eyeballed as more than large enough for multiple golf bags and was rated at 31 miles per gallon by the EPA.
That is accomplished with Mazda’s cylinder deactivation technology, which shuts off its two outside cylinders in cruising conditions, and a transmission that recalibrates gear ratios for more spirited driving.
Still dealing with the remnants of our week of inclement weather, the Mazda6’s front-wheel drive and post-factory Bridgestone Blizzak tires made for a comfortable safety blanket. G-vectoring Control Plus doesn’t hurt, either.
Bottom line: The Mazda6 Signature accelerates and handles like a tame sports car.
Mazda6 comes in multiple trim levels including Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve and the top-of-the-line Signature. That means the Signature is loaded with every creature comfort and safety feature known to man.
I’m gonna cram the best amenities into two paragraphs for brevity. Highlights include a BOSE premium audio system with 11 speakers, the previously mentioned leather seats, navigation, dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing windshield wipers, rear-view camera, heated and ventilated front seats, and high-beam control
More goodies worthy of note is Bluetooth with audio pairing, heads-up display, two USB ports, LED ambient lighting, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, moonroof, electronic parking brake, and paddle shifters.
The Mazda6 exterior is spiffed up with a rear lip spoiler, 19-inch alloy wheels, gunmetal front grille, dual-exhaust with bright outlets and LED headlights.
Signature comes with a full suite of i-Activsense safety features including dynamic stability and traction control, radar cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, advanced smart city brake support, anti-theft immobilizer and 24-hour roadside assistance.
Mazda has put together a Signature package that will not only meet your expectations – but exceed them. And with a price that is far less than luxury, smart consumers will make this vehicle a bestseller.
