Lexus LC 500h: charms with its speed and looks

It has only been four short months since I test drove the 2018 Lexus LC 500h.

Now I’ve driven the real deal! The 2018 Lexus LC 500 with its larger-than-life 5.0 liter, V8, DOHC, 32-valve, dual VVT-i variable valve timing engine that delivers 471-horsepower and 398 lb.-ft. of torque.

It’s a well-proven performance engine, with a low-mass reciprocating assembly using lightweight forged connecting rods, along with titanium intake and exhaust valves to allow a 7,300-rpm redline.

With the push of a button, the sound of the engine sends shivers up the spine and makes your hair stand on end. When the gas pedal is depressed and the LC 500 surges from 0-to-60 in less than 4.5 seconds, unfettered driving nirvana is achieved.

I had Audi and BMW passengers stick their phones out the window on the freeway and take photos and video of the LC 500. No joke. I had people stop me in parking lots to ask questions. I saw more rubbernecking than I can ever remember as the Infrared Red painted LC 500 passed.

Needless to say, the car gets noticed.

The Lexus LC combines stunning design, scintillating performance, long-distance comfort and premium craftsmanship to join an elite group of international grand-touring coupes.

It comes with a six-figure (before tax) price tag, so people like me can dream… but that’s about all.

The LC 500 seats four adults, although the two sitting in the rear had better work for Cirque de Soleil. It comes with a usable trunk, although not for golf clubs. But ask me if I cared. Depending on your driving habits — and I’ll be honest — mine weren’t eco-friendly, the LC 500 produced around 23 miles per gallon fuel economy.

Best of all, really, is the LC 500’s design. It certainly looks the part of a race car. Highlighted by the brand’s hallmark spindle grille and prominent quarter panels that flare away from the center of the car and door panels that are pulled inward, the car looks fast standing still.

The design itself helps achieve performance targets, especially with regard to low center of gravity, aerodynamics and high-speed stability. An available active rear spoiler automatically deploys when vehicle speed rises above 50 mph, reducing lift to further enhance high-speed stability.

Interior features include comfortable seats with side bolsters and lumbar support, a heads up display that not only includes current speed, but navigation directionals, so eyes never need to leave the road.

The LC 500 is loaded with luxury, convenience and safety features, but I had to prioritize words, and this car charms with speed and looks alone.

Simply irresistible. Might make for a catchy song title and video as well.
