“We made our decision based on experience and qualifications,” he said. “This is an extremely valuable job that will have a huge impact in Monroe and in East Snohomish County.”
Sax, who was on the County Council from 2001 to 2005, is expected to spend the first couple of weeks on the job being introduced to local businesses and becoming familiar with Monroe’s comprehensive plan, Zimmerman said. His first day at work was Sept. 1.
Sax will work within the Public Works Department. Even though Zimmerman is not his immediate supervisor, he expects to work closely with Sax on issues that relate to businesses and development.
The position, paid by the general fund, was a high priority for Zimmerman. Its creation was approved by the City Council in early April in a 4-1 vote. His hiring does not need approval from the council because this is a management-level position, according to city officials.
Thirty-six people applied. Most live outside Snohomish County, human resources manager Teri Smith said.
The three top candidates were interviewed by a Brad Feilberg, public works director, and rated by a four-member panel comprised of Zimmerman and the heads of different city departments on Aug. 23.
