Twelve-year-old golfer Malia Schroeder of Arlington tied for fifth nationally in the girls 12-13 age group at the Drive, Chip and Putt championships.
The event was held April 2 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, prior to the start of the Masters.
Schroeder, a sixth-grader at Lakewood Middle School, totaled 15 points to finish in a three-way tie for fifth out of 10 golfers. With 10 possible points apiece for driving, chipping and putting, Schroeder earned three points in driving, three points in chipping and nine points in putting.
Kayla Sam of Anaheim Hills, California, placed first with 26 points.
Lake Stevens girls win state title
The Lake Stevens sixth-grade girls basketball feeder team won the Gold Division at the Washington Middle School Basketball Championships held March 11-13 in Spokane. Lake Stevens defeated Ferndale 43-26 in the championship game.
Lake Stevens finished its travel league schedule with a 14-0 record and went undefeated through the league tournament before advancing to the state tournament at the Spokane Convention Center, where Lake Stevens posted a 3-1 record.
The team included Emily Justus, Randi Barlow, Baylor Thomas, Josie Bitnes, Shealyn Haack, Anna Schroedl, Cori Wilcox, Camille Jentzsch, Bella Evans and Taylor Reed. The coaches were Jack Wilcox, JT Thomas and Justin Evans.
