AquaSox clinch playoff berth with win over Emeralds

Ben Ramirez’s late home run gives Everett the lead and the AquaSox hang on for a 2-1 win to clinch a postseason spot.

EVERETT — Ben Ramirez hit a go-ahead, two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Everett AquaSox beat the Eugene Emeralds 2-1 on Monday to clinch a berth into the Northwest League championship series.

With the win Everett moved seven games up on Eugene with just five games to play in the second half. The AquaSox will play Vancouver, which won the first half, in the best-of-five championship series beginning on Sept. 12 in Everett.

Jarod Bayless came on with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the ninth inning and proceeded to strike out both batters he faced to secure the win and the playoff berth.

Reid VanScoter started on the mound for Everett (71-56, 37-24 second half) and turned in a terrific outing. VanScoter struck out 12 and allowed just one run on seven hits in 6.2 innings.

Aeverson Arteaga went 4-for-5 at the plate for Eugene (64-63, 30-31).
