Regarding a recent letter to the editor regarding climate change: Yes, fossil fuel companies have knowingly continued to harm our health and that of our planet!
We need the political will to immediately reduce our carbon dioxide emissions, according to scientists, many businesses, and those of us who are living the damage: fires, floods, droughts, storms (and we can look forward to them increasing in intensity if politicians sit on their hands).
We individuals can take steps to reduce our carbon footprints, but what is needed is a massive effort by governments. There are many suggestions, but the one that stands out as having the most rapid and serious effect is waiting in Congress. Has your representative signed on?
It’s HR 2307, the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act. This would put a gradually increasing price on carbon emissions at the source (the mine or well) and return these “pollution fees” as a rebate to consumers. Oil companies would pay for the damage they’ve been doing for decades, and we consumers would have the funds and options to make more renewable energy choices.
I want my children and grandchildren to inherit a livable planet, and want them to know that I did all I could to make that so.
