On Jan. 24, the Trump administration issued a “stop-work order” for all existing programming funded by U.S. foreign assistance. A foreign assistance review conducted in good faith is a valid exercise. It would help strengthen programs and show the positive impact of health, education and poverty programs. However, this action is catastrophic for communities around the world and undermines U.S credibility internationally.
Overnight, people will lose access to lifesaving medicines and treatment. Nurses and health workers and doctors will be unable to care for people in need of health care. Prenatal care and safe childbirth will not be possible. And the order goes well beyond health. The core nutrition, water, and sanitation programs will evaporate. As a pediatrician, I believe that preventing aide for medical care is unconscionable.
Stopping all aid without any warning takes the United States backward in making America safer, stronger, and more prosperous. It will have devastating impacts around the world. I urge our members of Congress to publicly oppose the stop-work order, and push for its immediate reversal.
