Boeing will deliver the 5,000th 737 today, in a ceremony down in Renton. Southwest Airlines — naturally — is the proud owner. The low-fare pioneer is the No. 1 buyer of Three-Sevens all time, having ordered 515.
The King County Journal — the 737’s hometown newspaper — took a long look at the world’s best-selling commercial jet on Sunday. http://www.kingcountyjournal.com/sited/story/html/230030
Key Quote: “The publishers of the Guinness book of World Records last week notified Boeing of their decision to officially recognize the Renton-built 737 as the ‘most-produced large commercial jet airplane in aviation history,’ said Sandy Angers, a spokeswoman for the 737 program. … For all of the hype Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliner has received as of late, the venerable 737 remains the company’s best-selling commercial airplane by a wide margin.”
And I had a story today http://www.heraldnet.com/stories/06/02/13/100bus_renton001.cfm that looks at the lives of a number of Boeing workers who live near Everett, but commute down to the company’s “other” jet factory.
Key Quote: “Boeing’s 737 is an American classic, said Teal Group analyst Richard Aboulafia -‘like the 747, only less glamorous.’”
This just in … here’s the official Boeing press release announcing the delivery. http://www.boeing.com/news/releases/2006/q1/060213b_nr.html
Key Quote: “‘The 737 is an icon of efficiency in air travel and one of commercial aviation’s greatest success stories,’ said Alan Mulally, president and chief executive officer of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. ‘We are absolutely thrilled that the world’s largest 737 operator — Southwest Airlines — is the owner of this historic airplane.’”
