EVERETT — Mayor Ray Stephanson officially presented Kathy Atwood with her chief of police badge today in the City Council Chambers.
The mayor announced in December that Atwood would become the police chief this year. She began her service officially on July 1.
Chief Atwood was born and raised in Everett. She attended Everett High School, received a bachelor’s degree from Pacific Lutheran University and a masters degree in public administration from Seattle University. She is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
“It’s been my preference to promote from within whenever possible,” Stephanson said. “It is with great pride that we work to develop employees for advancement. Chief Atwood is the best qualified person to be our new police chief. She has the experience and respect to lead this department.”
Atwood began her career with Everett Police Department in 1989 and has held various assignments with the department, including serving in the operations, investigations and administrative services divisions.
Atwood’s commitment to public service includes her position as president of the board of directors for Dawson Place Child Advocacy Center and previous service on the Snohomish County Children’s Commission.
In 2009, she was the recipient of the Law Enforcement Support Award from Snohomish County Domestic Violence Services. She is also an active member of the Washington Chapter of FBI National Academy Associates serving on the Training and Finance Committees.
“This is a great honor, and I look forward to serving the community I grew up in through this new role,” Atwood said.
