Western Washington Medical Group Gastroenterology has added osteopath Maiyen Tran Hawkins to the practice. Beginning Oct. 1, she will see patients at 4225 Hoyt Avenue, Suite A, in Everett. Hawkins grew up in Virginia and completed her internship, residency and gastroenterology fellowship training at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.
1st Security Bank has promoted Kathrine Shairrick to the position of senior vice president of service and operations. The 15-year banking veteran joined 1st Security in December as vice president of consumer loan servicing. Shairrick spent most of her youth on Whidbey Island and now resides in Snohomish.
Dr. Julie Furlan, who grew up in Mukilteo, is the first vitreoretinal specialist and surgeon to join The Everett Clinic. Furlan will care for patients with retinal disorders, such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and retinal tears or detachments. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Medical Association.
Kitsap County Commissioner Josh Brown will become the new executive director of the Puget Sound Regional Council. Brown was selected after a nationwide search to succeed Bob Drewel of Snohomish County, who is retiring at the end of the year. Brown will start work on Jan. 2.

City of Mountlake Terrace finance director Sonja Springer and treasurer Mick Horton have earned the Professional Finance Officer Award from the Washington Finance Officers Association for the eighth year in a row. Additionally, the Government Finance Officers Association awarded Mountlake Terrace a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for preparation of the 2012-13 biennial budget.

Lamoureux Real Estate celebrated 25 years in business by donating $25,000 to charity. At a party at the Everett Yacht Club, five Snohomish County nonprofits each received a check for $5,000. Recipients were Housing Hope, Everett Youth Hockey Booster Club, Christmas House of Snohomish County, Evergreen Arboretum and Gardens and Providence Hospice and Home Care.
Klein Honda recently held its fourth annual charity golf tournament at Walter Hall Golf Course. More than 70 registered players teed off at the Sept. 19 event. Funds raised from the annual tournament go to the Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross. Klein Honda has contributed morethan $18,000 to the organization so far this year.

Ford Motor Co. and Bickford Ford will donate $20 for every person who test-drives a new vehicle at a special event to support the Glacier Peak High School football team. The Ford Drive 4 UR School event is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday at the school’s tennis court parking lot. Up to $6,000 in funds will be donated.

Trinity Lutheran College has experienced a fourth consecutive year of enrollment growth. The college recently reported 17 percent growth over last year’s enrollment. Overall, there has been an increase of more than 135 percent since the college moved to Everett six years ago. Trinity offers 10 academic majors, 17 minors and more than 40 programs of study.

The state Department of Labor and Industries will be present at the Washington State Fair, and later at home shows throughout the state, to offer tips on remodeling projects and hiring contractors registered with the state. Registered contractors must have liability insurance, a business license and a bond, which gives homeowners some monetary recourse if a job is left undone.
The U.S. Department of Labor has announced awards totaling approximately $176.4 million to 40 state workforce agencies for unemployment insurance program integrity, performance and system improvement projects. The grants will support state efforts to ensure the programs run efficiently and to identify any areas of weakness that could result in improper payments. Washington’s share in the awards amounted to $1,682,262.
