The Boeing Co. has decided to end production of the 757 jetliner
The decision “reflects the market reality for the 757,” said Commercial Airplanes chief Alan Mulally, who was scheduled to make an announcement at 3:30 this afternoon.
The move was announced hours after Continental Airlines Chief Executive Gordon Bethune announced his airline was near to an agreement with Boeing to convert five of the 11 757s it has on orders into 737s. That leaves Boeing with only a dozen 757 orders on its books, with no more on the horizon.
About 150 people work on the 757 assembly line in Renton. A spokeswoman for the Machinists said it’s the union’s hope they will be transferred to work on 737s. Boeing plans to increase the pace of 737s in the coming year.
