Jet assembly workers are getting hit harder by Boeing layoffs than Machinists union leaders expected.
Boeing sent out 1,100 60-day layoff notices today — 700 of those notices were to workers here in the Puget Sound region.
Tom Wroblewski, president of the local Machinists district, said on Friday that his members received 452 of those notices.
“It just doesn’t make any sense,” Wroblewski said.
Boeing has said it plans to deliver some 480 jets this year. But Wroblewski said many final assembly workers in the 767 and 777 lines got pink slips.
A Boeing spokesman wasn’t available immediately for comment.
UPDATE: Here are a few comments from the statement on the Machinists’ Web site:
As recent as last week, we offered to partner with the company to help resolve the production issues facing the 787 to achieve certification and to date, that offer has gone unanswered.
We strongly believe Boeing should keep all available Boeing employees working to complete and certify the 787. ..
Our position has been and will continue to be that no loyal Boeing employee should be laid off so long as there are any contractors on site doing work our experienced members should be doing.
